Barrett's Esophagus

This is a precancerous condition of esophagus which can some times lead to esophageal cancer. It is many times associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease but it could be present without any symptoms also.

The lining of lower esophagus near the stomach changes into stomach like lining and sometimes even like intestine. Then it is called Barrett’s esophagus. Over the time the Barrett's cells may develop abnormal changes known as dysplasia which can progress to low grade, then to high grade and finally to cancer. Fortunately, this happens only in about 1-5% of patients with Barrett's esophagus.

Diagnosis of Barrett's esophagus requires an examination called upper endoscopy or EGD (esophagogastroduodenoscopy). During this upper endoscopy, Barrett’s esophagus can be easily be diagnosed, but biopsies are required to make the diagnosis of dysplasia. If there is no dysplasia, periodic check ups every year or two are recommended. Currently, there are no medications to reverse Barrett's esophagus. However, it appears that treating the underlying GERD may slow the progress of the disease and prevent complications. Photo dynamic therapy and diathermic bipolar cauterization are evolving treatments for Barrett’s esophagus. We offer this treatment.
